HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY
This is an X-ray examination performed with the injection of contrast material into the uterus to identify the pathway of the fallopian tubes and observe changes in the uterine cavity. The contrast follows the same path that sperm would take through the tubes to reach the egg, making it possible to detect changes that may hinder this process, such as blocked fallopian tubes, twisted tubes, fixed tubes, or tubal dilation.
In addition, the contrast is able to fill the inside of the uterine cavity, so changes in this filling pattern may reveal polyps, fibroids, or uterine malformations.
This is a basic examination in the evaluation of infertility cases and is part of the initial assessment. For example, it is of fundamental importance in determining which type of treatment—insemination or fertilization—is most appropriate.
The examination is performed at a specific time in the cycle: before ovulation and after menstruation has ended, usually between days 6 and 14 of the menstrual cycle.
