HYSTEROSCOPY

HYSTEROSCOPY

This is an examination in which an endoscopic camera is inserted through the cervix in order to evaluate the cervix and the inner cavity of the uterus, which is lined by the endometrium.

It is the gold-standard examination for evaluating conditions that affect the inner cavity of the uterus, such as endometrial polyps, submucosal fibroids, uterine adhesions, uterine septa, or endometritis. It can be performed in a doctor’s office or in a hospital setting, with or without sedation.

There are 2 types of hysteroscopy:

Diagnostic hysteroscopy: its purpose is to examine the inside of the uterus to diagnose possible abnormalities. It may be performed during an infertility evaluation or in other clinical situations, such as abnormal bleeding. During this examination, an endometrial tissue sample (biopsy) may be collected for analysis. In most cases, it is performed without the need for anesthesia and is well tolerated.

Surgical hysteroscopy: its purpose is to treat abnormalities inside the uterus by removing fibroids and polyps and correcting uterine septa and adhesions, among other conditions. Surgical hysteroscopy follows the guidelines for a surgical procedure. It is performed in a hospital setting with anesthesia, according to medical guidance.
