Assisted reproductive procedures for LGBTQIAP+ families

When we think about LGBTQIAP+ families, we need to move beyond old paradigms that recognize only one way of existing in the world. Understanding the difference between gender identity, sexual orientation, and biological sex goes beyond linguistic precision—it is about fostering an equitable perspective among diverse people.

Sexual orientation refers to the constitution of desire and affection; gender identity relates to how people position themselves in the world and in their social relationships; and biological sex refers to the genitalia, hormones, and chromosomes identified at birth, without subjective and/or cultural construction.

Therefore, respecting the diversity of LGBTQIAP+ family structures means understanding the diversity of assisted reproduction treatments available to these individuals. In this regard, OrigenRio Clinic is firmly committed to ensuring equal access. In other words, the full range of family-building treatments can and should be available to everyone who wishes to use them.
There are no treatments that are specific solely based on sexual orientation. Rather, there are assisted reproduction treatments designed for people who wish to build a family, with differences arising from the composition of family units—that is, from the intersection of sexual orientation, gender identity, and biological sex.

Currently, the main assisted reproduction treatments available for family building are timed intercourse, intrauterine insemination, in vitro fertilization, shared egg donation, and gestational surrogacy. Timed intercourse, a low-complexity treatment, is recommended
for families made up of people with different reproductive systems who experience challenges in conceiving, whether due to fertility issues or hormonal variations.

Intrauterine insemination is recommended for families in which at least one person has a uterus, using sperm from the other family member or donor sperm, if necessary.

In vitro fertilization, a high-complexity procedure, is indicated for families wishing to use their own genetic material or donor genetic material to create an embryo outside the body, which is then transferred to the intended parent’s uterus or to a gestational carrier.

Shared egg donation can be a cost-sharing solution for families who need assisted reproduction, for example, due to the absence of certain gametes.

Gestational surrogacy is indicated for families whose members are unable to carry a pregnancy, whether due to the absence of a uterus, a physiological condition, or simply the choice not to become pregnant.

In general, regardless of family structure or the identity and sex of its members, respect for and the choices of each family unit take precedence in the treatments offered by OrigenRio Clinic. These treatments are tailored to meet each person’s individual needs.

After all, we are a clinic focused on people, and we could never reduce their diversity to a list of categories. Instead, we strive to prepare our team to welcome the diversity of everyone who comes to us.
