SPERM DONATION

SPERM DONATION

Sperm donation is always carried out voluntarily and anonymously by young individuals (between 21 and 45 years old), who are healthy and have excellent semen quality. This resource helps couples who, for various reasons, are unable to conceive on their own. The use of donated sperm is recommended in the following cases:

● Patients seeking to become single parents by choice;
● In cases of azoospermia, meaning the absence of sperm production;
● LGBTQIAP+ couples who require sperm to create embryos.

How does a sperm bank work?

SPERM DONATION

A sperm bank stores anonymously donated samples. Donors complete a detailed form with physical and personal characteristics and then provide a semen sample, obtained through masturbation. The sperm bank is responsible for storing the sample. The semen is then cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196°C so that its fertilizing capacity is maintained. There is no restriction on storage time, and sperm cryopreserved for more than 30 years still retains the same potential when thawed.

A person who donates genetic material cannot be considered the biological parent of embryos generated from their gametes under the law.

It is important to note that all donors undergo testing before the collection and again 6 months after the donation. This measure follows ANVISA regulations and ensures the safety of the donation process.

Fertility clinics in Brazil do not have their own sperm banks. Therefore, they use samples from independent sperm banks, which may even be located abroad. The patient purchases the sample directly from the bank after completing the required paperwork and obtaining the signature of the responsible physician. The semen sample is then sent directly to the clinic where the treatment will be performed.

The sperm bank and the donor must sign an agreement to guarantee confidentiality and that the donation is provided free of charge.

Couples who choose to use a sperm bank do not have access to the donor’s identity but receive a list of general characteristics, usually including:

  • Blood type

  • Skin color

  • Occupation

  • Eye color

  • Weight

  • Religion

  • Hair color

  • Height

  • Hobbies
